5km Rule.

I’ve been seeing a lot individual solo recitals lately, as over the course of the year I’ve met and made friends with a lot of people in the music program at UWO. As a course requirement, they must all perform solo recitals, and as an added twist, they all have to attend each others’ performances.

One such friend is Nicole’s vocal professor, who occasionally lets me sit in on their classes and always spares me a little time when I’m around. Shortly after Nicole’s recital on Saturday, I was talking to her and she told me about the 5km Rule.

“Within 5km, everything is great,” she told me. No matter who you’re speaking to, or about what, nothing but loveliness should be the gist of the conversation, because you never know who might come around the corner or speak to whomever about something they might have heard. It’s only in the car on the way home, over 5km away, that you should feel free to let your opinion known.

I nodded. “Oh, we have something like that where I’m from, too,” I told her. “Only we call it tact.”
