Only a matter of time.

Marianas Trench - Decided To Break It, acoustic, live on Urban Rush

I love this clip. A lot of you msged me about it; I posted it some time ago, and it got taken down from Youtube and other places for awhile, but now it’s back (at least for the time being). Enjoy it all over again, and be sure to turn it up. Jazz hands!

Realize.

A little sweetness; Colbie Caillat is very pleasant on the ears. I’m not sure if this is a new single or what, but it’s a new offering from the label (onlined just today) and a sweet little tune on what here in Canada is a shitfuckawful cold, windy day. Featuring Jason Reeves and Mikal Blue.

Conversely, if pleasant isn’t what you’re after, The Mars Volta have recently released a series of videos on Youtube featuring music off of their latest frantic effort, The Bedlam In Goliath (now in stores). Your choice, really.

Iron & Wine.

Iron & Wine - Boy With A Coin

Despite the odd moment, which we all have, I don’t like to think of myself as any kind of music snob. I try not to hate on anything that anyone listens to, and try to keep an open mind about new things and artists when they come along.

One thing I’ve found of late, however - and in fact, I found for much of 2007 - that due to all the music blogs I read on a fairly regular basis, I’m finding out about new music and artists before much of the mainstream media. Granted, I’m learning about them through the resourcefulness of others, but still ahead of the curve all the same, even if I am standing on the shoulders of giants, and well… that makes it a little frustrating at times.

One such artist is Iron & Wine (or more specifically, folk singer/songwriter Sam Beam). Although he’s been releasing music since 2002 and has been featured on notable film soundtracks (like a little film called Garden State), this former professor of cinematography seems to have surprised a lot of people; magazines all over have heralded his latest release, The Shepherd’s Dog, as prolific and uncannily brilliant. Meanwhile, it all seems like such old news to me already…

One last thought: if you enjoy the song above, and are interested in hearing more by Iron & Wine, I recommend using The Hype Machine for your searching needs. And don’t worry, cos Sam Beam is a hero along the Intertubes.

John Mayer - Stop This Train, Live, Dec. 10th 2006.

“So scared of getting older, I’m only good at being young.
So I play the numbers game to find a way to say that life has just begun…

Had a talk with my old man, said, “help me understand.” He said, “turn 68, you’ll renegotiate - don’t stop this train. Don’t for a minute change the place you’re in.”

The problem with me is…

January 25, 2008

Part one in a series of ∞

I don’t like the phone. I never have. I don’t like talking on it, I don’t like answering it, or getting most calls… I don’t really know what it is, I just don’t. Psychoanalysis may one day show that I suffered a traumatic experience, sitting one day desperately waiting for a call that never came, but until then, I have to assume it’s as normal a thing as I am.

I think it probably lends itself largely to the fact that I’ve really adopted computers over the years, and little things like Web 2.0; I mean, were it not for Facebook, there’re a ton of people I’d have extremely seldom to no contact with at all. The Internet does everything for me, from email to online shopping and banking and the like.

I warn people of this as much and often as possible, but it remains something about me that remains unchanged over the years. I just don’t call people on the phone. If anything good comes out of it, it’s that holidays and celebrations are made the more special for the fact that I put all of that aside to actually connect with people and show them that they actually mean that much to me.

Justified? No… I’ll admit that. And there are too many people out there, like the Rodrigues’ in Bradford, for example, that I simply adore and wish I could keep in better touch with, if only I could get over this issue of mine (oh, and also, if you’re reading, I don’t have your number anymore. I looked, I miss you guys a lot).

I don’t know, just… the problem with me is that I don’t like talking on the phone.

The Alchemy Index.

January 24, 2008

Been looking into a lot of bands the past bit, particularly those I mentioned a couple of days ago that were named to the Alternative Press list of essential albums of 2007.

One I’ve been particularly impressed with so far is Thrice, and the music off of their latest disc, The Alchemy Index Vols. I & II: Fire and Water - a two disc concept album, with volumes three and four (Air, Earth) coming soon. It’s not for everyone, surely, but it’s intriguing and experimental and urgent, and I enjoy it very much so far.

Here’s a link to a few tracks off of the album, via the Hype Machine. Tell me what you think.
